Colombia Sampler: History, Nature and Coffee 

Day 1: Arrive Bogota
You are met at the Bogota Airport and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2: Bogota
After breakfast take a 4 hour guided city tour. The tour includes the Plaza de Bolívar (the city’s main square) and government buildings situated around it, La Candelaria (the old colonial part of town), the San Francisco Church, the Gold Museum (closed on Monday’s). The tour finishes with a trip by funicular railway or cable car to the top of Monserrate, the best-known of the mountains that borders the city to the east. Remainder of the day at your leisure. (B)

Day 3: Bogota – Villa De Leyva
Leaving Bogota and travelling north, you cross the savannah landscape to the town of Zipaquira about 50 km away. Upon arrival you visit the remarkable Salt Cathedral. This unique building was constructed approximately 120 meters underground in what used to be a salt mine. Lights uncover the carved rock and the tunnels that house the Stations of the Cross. At the end are three naves representing Jesus’ birth and baptism, his life and death and, finally, his resurrection. Each one has an altar. Every nave has beautiful sculptures carved by miners and sculptors. You also visit Zipaquira’s charming central square. The trip ends in Villa de Leyva (B)

Day 4: Villa De Leyva
Free day to explore the colonial town of Villa de Leyva. Villa de Leyva was founded in 1572 and built according to Spanish architectural principles. You find white facades, wooden windows and doors, and lovely balconies with Hispanic and Moorish influences. Enjoy a stroll through the village visiting the central plaza with its churches, restaurants and handicraft shops.

Optional Iguaque Hike: Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary is a beautiful hike where you ascend to Lake Iquaque, a sacred lake for the Muiscas people and the birth of mankind. Today, many people believe that a trip to the lake cleanses the soul and purifies the spirit. The hike crosses several vegetation zones including high Andean forest and stands of oak, paramo, dry brush and several wetlands. The total hiking time is 5-6 hours and reaches an altitude of 3800 metres above sea level. (B)

Day 5: Villa De Leyva – Bogota
In the morning you start with a visit to the “Ecce Homo” Dominican convent, constructed in the XVII century and then continue to see a fossil which has been dated at over 150 million years old discovered outside of Villa de Leyva. Your return journey to Bogota passes through Raquira, a village of quaint and colourful little houses, famous for its pottery and ceramics. Overnight in Bogota. (B)

Day 6: Bogota – Armenia
This morning you transfer to the Bogota airport for your flight to Armenia. You are met at the Armenia Airport and driven to your hotel. In the afternoon, you visit a special coffee growing farm. Get to know the process of coffee cultivation, selection, production, cupping lab performing, and of course, sample delicious coffee. (B)

Day 7: Cocora Valley & Salento
With breathtaking landscapes Cocora Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in Colombia. Here you find the impressive “Palma de Cera”, the Colombian national tree and one of the tallest varieties of palm in the world. On the way back to Armenia visit Salento a picturesque village that recalls the heyday of the coffee triangle. (B)

Day 8: Otun Quimbaya
Today visit Otun Quimbaya. Otun Quimbaya Sanctuary is characterized by vegetation common to very humid Andean forest with a diversity of orchids and bromeliads. Fog thickly covers the tops of the mountains giving the sanctuary a engimatic atmosphere. Discover a wide variety of birds, butterflies and mammals. If you are lucky, you will hear the shrieks of howler monkeys. (B)

Day 9: Armenia – Bogota
Today transfer to the Armenia Airport for your return flight to Bogota. Depart for home or continue your journey through Colombia. (B)

Cartagena Extension

Day 1: Cartagena
You arrive into Cartagena where you are met and transferred to your hotel.

In the afternoon you have a half-day city tour of fascinating Cartagena. The tour begins with a visit to the Convent of La Popa, a 17th century monastery with a 22 karat gold-foil altar and spectacular views of Cartagena. Continue to the Castillo de San Felipe, an immense fort filled with history and mysteries hidden in its stone-walled tunnels. The fort was built to protect the city from pirates and other invaders. It is considered to be the most important architecture of Spanish military engineering. The rest of the visit includes a walking tour in the ‘Old Town’. Visit churches, museums, and plazas. (B)

Day 1: Coffee Baptism

You are met at the Periera airport and transferred to your hotel.

Begin your exploration of the “Coffee Triangle” with a coffee tour. As you walk through the coffee 
plantation, you learn the secrets and techniques of cultivation, harvesting, peeling, selection and the roasting process. To test your knowledge and taste buds you are invited to participate in the Coffee Baptism. The barista demonstrates and offers samples of some of the finest coffee.

Spend the evening in a hacienda or a tourist superior hotel. (L,D)

Day 2: Hike Otun Quimbaya and Bike Los Nevados

In the morning explore the Otun Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, a 489 hectare cloud forest filled with hundreds of species of birds, butterflies, orchids, bromeliads, and small mammals. 

Continue your journey towards Manizales and the foothills of Los Nevados, home to the highest peaks in the Central Cordillera. The ecosystem, known as Paramo, is found over 3,200 meters and features many unique high altitude species of birds and plants including thousands of conspicuous Speletia or Frailejon

Your biking adventure begins here. You ride mostly downhill enjoying great moorland scenery and vistas to the warm valleys below. You descend into a cloud forest and end your cycling adventure surrounded by Colombian farmland. Continue north along the Cauca River to La Pintada where you spend the evening enjoying the views to the Gorge below. (B,L)

Day 3: Rafting the Rio Buey

This morning travel through the Cauca River Valley to the shores of Rio Buey. This valley is dotted with small traditional villages and rich agricultural land.  

The Rio Buey is a class III river with a few class IV rapids that can be portaged, if water flow is high. The river is surrounded by cloud forest and remote farmland. The river offers many exciting features making for a great river day! 

The run ends at the convergence with the Armas River. You spend the evening in a nearby local hotel with great views to the Cauca river gorge. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Santa Fe De Antioquia And Serrania de Las Baldias  

Today visit Santa Fe de Antioquia, a small colonial town founded in 1541. Its squares, streets, plazas and churches are some of the best preserved colonial architecture in Colombia.

After lunch, continue to nearby Serrania de Las Baldias. This scarcely visited high altitude cloud forest reserve offers an exceptional hike as it is home to thousands of rare orchids and bromeliads, most of them endemic. This 7 Km hike begins at 3,150 m with views of the Central and Occidental mountain ranges. It descends to 2,500 m. where you will continue to Medellin. Your hotel is located in “zona rosa” filled with galleries, restaurants and nightlife. (B,L,D)

Day 5: Medellin City Tour And Mountain Bike In ARVI Nature Reserve

Medellin or “City of Eternal Spring” is one of the most prosperous, trendiest, and fashion oriented cities in South America. Your city tour starts with a visit to Plaza Botero in honor of Colombia’s famous artist, Fernando Botero, and continues to the Antioquia Museum and the botanical garden.

Ride up on a cable car to ARVI Nature Reserve. The cable car ride offers amazing views of the city. At the top of the ridge pick up your mountain bikes and begin your cycle on scenic trails within the reserve. From here you cycle on some of the most scenic trails within the park, visit a lake and search for bird life. 

Your day ends with a visit to the Silleteros or saddle men who live in the Santa Elena community. The Silleteros were porters that used to carry goods and even people during the colonial era. Today this community maintains its tradition as flowers carriers; they prepare elaborate floral arrangement especially for their main event during the Feria de Flores.
