Day 2: Buenos Aires

This morning leave the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires behind and enter the ecological reserve, Costanera Sur Nature Reserve. You and your guide explore this 350 hectare reserve that was once a landfill but is now filled with abundant pampa and over 200 species of birds. We may also see river turtles, iguanas and nutria (otters). Return to the hotel by independent arrangements.

The Four Balconies of Buenos Aires is an exclusive visit in which a guide, a professor of the University, uses four parks and plazas to bring alive Buenos Aires’ history, its everyday life and the peculiar psychology of the ‘porteno’, the inhabitants of Buenos Aires. (B)

Day 3: Puerto Deseado

This morning transfer to the domestic airport for your flight to Comodoro Rivadavia. Here you are met and transferred by land to Puerto Deseado. If time and weather permits, you stop for a short hike en-route. The first part of the journey follows the old tracks of the train that connected the estancias in the Andes and Puerto Deseado. The landscape then changes to the harsh Patagonian steppe. (B)
Puerto Deseado
Day 4: Puerto Deseado

Enjoy the morning exploring Puerto Deseado independently. Puerto Desead has been visited since the 16th century by pirates, buccaneers, and explorers. Names like Cavendish and Drake are part of the naval history of Puerto Deseado. At the local museum you can view the HMS Swift, a British sloop-of- war, found in an extraordinary state of preservation.

In the afternoon board a zodiac to explore the Deseado Estuary. The estuary is a rich biological area home to 4 species of cormorants (including the rare red-legged cormorant), Magellan oystercatchers, and Magellan penguins. Enjoy a 3 hour walk as you explore this wonderful area. (B)

Day 5: Puerto Deseado

This morning take a 45 minute boat ride to Penguin Island. Dolphins often accompany you to the island. Disembark on the island and begin a 20 minute walk to the first and largest Magellan Penguins colonies. Penguins will be a common sight all day! Visit an abandoned lighthouse, now very popular with the penguins. Continue your walk to a promontory where you find the beautiful Rock Hopper Penguins. There are about 400 couples on the island. They build their nests on top of volcanic rocks, feed on crustaceans, fish, calamari and are excellent divers reaching about 100m depth. On the return journey you stop at a large sea lion and elephant seals colony. (B, BL)
